Description
Valdemar Sejr (1170–1241) was King of Denmark from 1202 until his death. Valdemar Sejr conquered large areas around the Baltic Sea, such as Pomerania and Estonia. The latter conquest was especially significant, as legend has it that the Danish flag, Dannebrog, fell from the sky here on June 15, 1219.
We have chosen to dedicate a beer to Valdemar Sejr, and we believe it is truly worthy of a victorious hero. It is a dark and sweet beer, reminiscent of the beers drunk in Denmark at that time, when malt was dried over an open fire. This gave the beer a caramelized and burnt flavor, along with aromas and tastes of coffee, licorice, and smoke. For this reason, we have used some smoked malt and added hazelnuts to the beer. Hazelnuts were often used in both beer and cooking during Valdemar Sejr’s time. Valdemar Sejr Bryg has a sweet and pleasant aroma of hazelnuts and smoke. The taste is sweet and rounded, with a touch of nougat.
Valdemar Sejr Bryg is one of several beers developed in collaboration between Ørbæk Brewery and Nyborg Castle.
